Wanli District, New Taipei

Wanli (Chinese万里 区, pinyin Wànlǐ Qū, PEH oē - jī Bān - lí ) is a district of the city of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan, Republic of China.

Location

Wanli is bordered on the northeast by the East China Sea, in the north- west and south to the likewise to New Taipei City and Jinshan districts belonging Xizhi, as well as in the south-east and south-west to the cities of Keelung and Taipei. During the Wanli coast is characterized by bizarre, entzstandene by erosion rock formations, the hinterland is hilly and wooded.

History and Significance

The area of present-day district was originally settled by Taiwanese aborigines. In the 17th century, first the Spaniards, then for a short time held the Dutch control over the area before they were expelled in 1661 by the troops landed at Wanli Zheng Chenggongs. In the following years, Chinese fishermen settled. One of the early settlements with names Wanli later gave the whole district its present name. While in earlier times the fishing was the major economic activity of the area, is today thanks to the picturesque coastal landscape Wanli especially the tourism of great importance.

Attractions

The most famous tourist attraction is the Cape Yeliu with its picturesque coastal landscape, famous for its caused by erosion and the human imagination inspiring rock formations.
