Jinshan District, New Taipei

Jinshan (Chinese金山区, Pinyin Jinshan Qū, PEH oē - jī Kim -san Khu ) is a city on the northern coast of the city of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan, Republic of China.

Location

Jinshan is located between the neighboring districts Shimen in the northwest and Wanli in the southeast. In the West, Jinshan District abuts the Sanzhi, southwest and south by the districts of Shilin and Beitou Taipei City, as well as in the north- east by the East China Sea.

In Jinshan, the headquarters of the Buddhist organization Dharma Drum Mountain is (English: Dharma Drum Mountain ( DDM) ), with monasteries and educational institutions such as the Dharma Drum Sangha University and the Dharma Drum College.

History

The area of present-day Jinshan was inhabited before the arrival of Chinese immigrants by natives of Ketagalan tribe. Due to the hilly and largely for agriculture only conditionally suitable terrain and proximity to the sea fisheries in former times was the main economic activity. During the Japanese rule over Taiwan, Jinshan developed at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to its charming scenery and thermal springs, a popular excursion destination in the greater Taipei area.

Tourism

Attractions of the district are the well-decorated private cemetery Jianbaoshan on which lies the grave of Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng, among others, as well as the Ju Ming Museum, which is dedicated to the work of the sculptor Ju Ming. Other attractions for visitors are the local thermal springs and the fish path, a native of ancient time walk between Jinshan and Shilin, which is a popular hiking trail through the scenic hills today.
