Shilin District

Shilin (Chinese士林 区, Shilin Qū Pinyin ) is a district in the north of Taipei. With a population of 280,000 inhabitants it is the second largest part of Taipei, and with an area of 62 km ² in area of greatest.

In the north- east of the district is the Datun Volcano Group, the largest mountain Qixing Shan (1120 m). In the southwest is the Dalun Shan Shan and Dazhi.

Overview and History

Because of the green area in northern Taipei Shilin is mainly a residential district. In addition, since many foreign schools are located in it, there are a large number of expatriates, mainly from Europe, the USA and Japan.

In early times the district Patt Iran was called, which means in the language of Ketagalan, the former natives in the area, "hot spring ". This name was later used by the Chinese immigrants via intermediates to the name Shilin. Under the Japanese rule from 1920 Shilin belonged to the district Shichisei (Chinese Qixing ). After the takeover by the Republic of China in 1945 Shilin got the status of a township ( zhen ) in Taipei County (now New Taipei City ). In July 1968, Shilin was incorporated along with the other villages Beitou, Nangang, Jingmei, and Muzha in Taipei City.

Tourism and Attractions

In Shilin is the National Palace Museum, the Yangmingshan National Park and the former residence of Chiang Kai- Shek. Also located in Shilin is the largest night market of Taipei, the Shilin Night Market.
