Warroad Lakers

The Warroad Lakers were an ice hockey team from Warroad, Minnesota. They are among the most successful amateur teams in the United States and played during its existence in different leagues in Canada and the United States. Thrice won the Lakers the Allan Cup, twice the Canadian Intermediate Championship and even the United States National Intermediate Championship.

History

The Warroad Lakers were founded in November 1946. In their first season the team played in the States - Dominion League, a league with teams from the region. In the very first season, the league championship was won. In the 1949/50 season, the newly built Warroad Memorial Arena was opened, which was used by the high school team and Lakers of Warroad. The following year, the Lakers changed the first time the League and competed in the Northwest Hockey League. 1955 was the first major title to be won, the team won the United States Championship Intermediate.

There followed several titles profits in different leagues. A high point represented the victory against the U.S. Olympic team in January 1960, when the Lakers defeated the U.S. Selection 6-4. Later the losing U.S. team with the Lakers players Bill and Roger Christian won the Olympic gold medal in Squaw Valley. 1964 brought the Warroad Lakers as the first U.S. team, the Edmonton Journal Trophy and were thus Canadian Intermediate Champions. A year later they were in the West final of the Allan Cup. In 1974, the Lakers winning the Hardy Cup for the second time Canadian Intermediate Champions. In 1984, David Christian, son of Bill Christian and former player of the Lakers at the Olympics and won with the U.S. team the gold medal. In the early 1990s changed the Lakers in the Central Amateur Senior Hockey League. 1993 new ice hockey stadium, The Gardens, was completed. The following year, the Lakers won for the first time the Allan Cup, the Canadian Senior Amateur Championship. This track they could defend in the next two years, until 1997 they were beaten in the final. After the Lakers already had a long time problem finding a suitable league, the team management decided after the end of the 50th season of the Lakers (1996/ 97) to set the game mode.

Between 2001 and 2003 existed with the Warroad Islanders a successor team, but pulled them back up again quickly from the game.
