Roger Christian (ice hockey)

Roger Allen Christian ( born December 1, 1935 in Warroad, Minnesota, † November 9, 2011 in Grand Forks, North Dakota ) was an American professional ice hockey player. He won with the U.S. national team at the 1960 Olympic Games gold medal.

Career

Christian grew up in Warroad in northern Minnesota. Together with his brother Bill, he led the 1953 ice hockey team of the High School of Warroad for State Tournament, where they only failed in the final at the St. Paul Johnson Governors. The team was coached by Cal Marvin. 1956 Christian graduated from the school. Together with his brother he played with few interruptions from now on for the Warroad Lakers, with whom they could show various successes and have been appointed to the trained also by Cal Marvin national team. With this, they participated in the World Championships 1958 in Oslo and there occupied the fifth place. Both were also selected for the U.S. team at the Olympic Hockey Tournament in 1960 in Squaw Valley. Very good this was the last game of the final round against Czechoslovakia, as the U.S. team was behind by two-thirds with 3:4 and Roger Christian in the third period hat-trick and the United States still won the game with 9:4 and thus the gold medal. Overall, Christian scored eight goals in six games and three assists. Furthermore, the brothers came at the 1962 World Cup ( 3rd place), the Olympic Winter Games in 1964, which the U.S. on the fifth graduating ( four goals and one assist in eight games ) and at the World Championships in 1965 in part, which ended the American sixth. For the Warroad Lakers Christian remained active until the 1970s.

In 1964, Christian and his brother Bill and his brother Hal Bakke, the Christian Brother's Hockey Sticks, a manufacturer of hockey sticks. In 2002 the company was sold to a sporting goods manufacturer.

1989 Christian was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
