Wedem Arad

Wedem Arad ( also Wedem Raad, äthiop ወደም አራድ. ) (* Probably before 1250, † probably 1314) was from 1299 to 1314 Neguse Negest ( Emperor ) of Ethiopia.

Wedem Arad was the eighth Emperor of the ruling since 1270 in Ethiopia Solomonic dynasty. He was the second son of Yekuno Amlak ( Tesfa also Iyessus ), the first emperor of this dynasty. Wedem Arad followed the brief ruling sons of his brother, Emperor Yagbea Seyon, on the throne. Overall, little is known about the reign of Emperor Wedem Arad, as the Ethiopian historiography began with his son and successor Amda Seyon.

Thus, only a campaign of the Emperor from the first year of his reign against the nomadic Muslim Sheikh Abu -Abdallah has been handed down. This Sheikh had called for a holy war against the Emperor. Abu -Abdallah was finally obliged to pay tribute and settled in the area of Shewa.

About the circumstances of the death of Emperor Wedem Arad is not known.

Due to the complicated transcription from the Amharic Ethiopian spelling proper names in different publications may be different.
