The White Laber opens into an oxbow lake of the Altmühltherme

The White Laber ( also known as white Laaber ) is a 44 km long left tributary of the Altmühltherme in Bavaria.

Course

It rises in the east Aubrunnen of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz in the district Voggenthal in the European watershed and flows from there through the Upper Palatinate Jura south. She's wearing in the headwaters to the confluence with the Breitenbrunner Laber also the name of sub- citizens Laber. In Unterdietfurt it splits up and opens into an oxbow lake of the Altmühltherme.

Character & environment

Because of the surrounding barren landscape the White Laber is often referred to as the Euphrates Bavaria. On her way she takes on in addition to numerous smaller tributaries from karst springs. The valley bog formations, which began 3000 years ago. In the extant remains of these bogs a number exist endangered animal and plant species.

Biking and hiking trails along the idyllic waters invite you to explore.

The river was crossed in October 1786 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during his Italian journey and then referred to him as " stinking filth broth ".
