Weißenfels–Zeitz railway

The railway line Weissenfels - Zeitz is a single-track main line in the south of Saxony- Anhalt. It runs from Weissenfels on Teuchern to Zeitz and is one of the trunk lines of the Burgenlandbahn.

History

The White Rock - Zeitz railway was opened between White Rock, Zeitz and Gera in 1859 by the Thuringian Railway Company. 1882 the management was taken over by the Prussian state railways. In its early days, the route was mainly used to transport industrial goods from Zeitz towards Halle and Erfurt. Today it connects the railway Halle- Bebra and the railway line Leipzig -Gera together.

After the Second World War, the second track was dismantled. In GDR times, among other things, sugar beet from the Thuringian Basin, cement and coal from Karsdorf were departed from the mining area to Profen. The track also served as Umleiterstrecke for the Thuringian Railway. So drove in the 1980s, associated with the expansion of the Thuringian Railway between Naumburg and Weissenfels, numerous scheduled freight trains and international express trains between white rock and Teuchern.
