Weißhorn (South Tyrol)

White Horn on the Jochgrimm

The White Horn ( Corno Bianco ), sometimes also called to distinguish it from the same mountains Aldeiner White Horn, is a 2317 m high mountain in the Val di Fiemme Alps in South Tyrol (Italy). Together with its neighboring twin mountain, the Black Horn, he is widely seen by its isolated location.

Location

The White Horn is a free-standing mountain south over the Regglberger plateau which extends between the lowlands and Eggental. Is located on its west flank of the beginning of the geologically interesting Bletterbach Canyon, to the east the land falls away to Lavazèjoch, behind the rise of Zanggen and to the northeast of the Latemar. On its south side it is about Jochgrimm (1989 m ) with its slightly higher twin mountain, the Black Horn ( 2439 m) connected.

Politically, there is the white horn on the territory of the municipality Aldein in South Tyrol.

Geology

The peak of the white horn is made of white sarl dolomite. This rock and the color contrast to the neighboring black horn, which consists of reddish- gray Bozen quartz porphyry, it takes its name. Between the two peaks, the geological fault of the so-called Trudner line, which was raised along the Black Horn by more than 1000 m over the White Horn runs. Due to the erosion, the layers were removed above the porphyry, of which the two summit today have a similar height.

Alpinism

The White Horn is accessible from several sides and is regarded as a simple tour destination, which is classified as not difficult, despite a steep final climb through the summit rocks.

The most popular tour to the White Horn begins on Jochgrimm and leads through meadows and mountain pine fields from the east to the summit building. Other walks lead from the west (from Radein forth on the edge of Bletterbach Gorge ) and north to the mountain top, which consists of a short north-south ridge. The summit cross is located at the northern edge of 2313 m, the highest point is located at the south end, however, to 2317 m.
