Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust is a charitable trust based in London, which was founded in 1936 to manage the legacy of Sir Henry Wellcome. His stated goal is " to promote research to improve the health of humans and animals ". He is, after promoting the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world's second richest foundation, medical research, and in 2006 had a fortune (USD 24.7 billion ) from 13.4 billion pounds.

Funded Projects

The Wellcome Trust invested over £ 400 million per annum in biomedical research, which mainly basic research without direct application. Funds from the Wellcome Trust have co-funded the following activities significantly:

  • Sequencing of the human genome by the Sanger Institute at Cambridge University
  • Development of the antimalarial drug artemisinin

  • Construction of the Wellcome Wing of London's Museum of Science

The Wellcome Trust also promotes the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at University College London.
