Wellsee

BW

The Wellsee is a lake in Kiel between the districts Elmschenhagen, Kroog, Ronne and Wellsee. He is since 1994 part of the nature reserve Wellsee and Wellsau lowlands, and was created by the rise in sea level after the last ice age.

Tributary to the lake is the Bach Well Schlüsbek, drain the Wellsau (also: Wilsau or Neuwührener Au). From there the water of the lake flows through the Schwentine the Baltic Sea.

In the first half of the 20th century, the Wellsee served the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods even for bathing; due to poor water quality bathing is prohibited, however, today. Nevertheless, the area around the lake is a popular recreational area. In severe winters it forms a center for skaters from all the surrounding districts, especially from Elmschenhagen and Kroog.

In the vast reed beds on the shore of the lake several live - rare - waterfowl. Since the late 1950s, the lake silted in some peripheral zones.
