Werner Döring

Werner Döring ( born September 2, 1911 in Berlin, † June 6, 2006 in Malente ) was a German professor of theoretical physics at the University of Hamburg.

Life and work

Werner Döring studied in Stuttgart and received his PhD in Theoretical Physics in 1936 with Richard Becker in Berlin ( Thesis: On the temperature dependence of the magnetostriction of nickel). After his habilitation in 1939 he was Privatdozent in Göttingen and in 1942, associate professor in Poznan. After the Second World War he returned to Göttingen back as an assistant to Becker and was a lecturer from 1946 Diet for Theoretical Physics in Braunschweig. From 1949 he was a professor at Giessen, was a year of research at the French-German Research Institute of Saint -Louis ( H. Schardin ) and in 1961 at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory and from 1963 until his retirement in 1977, full professor at the University of Hamburg 1 theoretical Physics Institute.

His main interest was the theory of magnetism and specifically ferromagnetism, with the particularity that it did not matter to him on theory alone, but also on applied and experimental aspects. Also noteworthy is the much acclaimed theory of Richard Becker and Werner Döring nucleation of small droplets (1935 ). His book on ferromagnetism with Becker from 1939 was long a standard work. He also dealt with detonation in gases ( with Becker, 1943) and ray representations of space groups.

Dörings textbooks on theoretical physics have influenced several generations of physics students sustainable.

He was representative of the DPG in the IUPAP Commission on magnetism.
