Werner Kaegi (composer)

Werner Kaegi ( born June 17, 1926 in Zurich ) is a Swiss musicologist and composer.

Life and work

Kaegi studied composition, musicology and mathematical logic. In 1952 he received his doctorate ( Dr. phil. ) At the University of Zurich with a dissertation on joints by Johann Sebastian Bach. As a versatile pianist, he was during his studies and companion of theater programs; also he made radio recordings as a bar pianist.

Kaegi was a student of Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger and Louis Aubert. With electronic music he has been, since 1951, he found contact with the circle around Pierre Schaeffer. He has written numerous compositions for both mechanical instruments and voices as well as electronic means. He has won numerous competitions, a highlight was the performance of electronic music for the Swiss Pavilion at the World Expo in Osaka in 1970. Kaegi has also addressed the issue of early to include elements of jazz in his musical language.

From 1963 to 1970 he worked at the Centre de Recherches Sonores de la Radio Suisse Romande in Geneva, since 1971 and he teaches research at the Institute of Sonology at Utrecht University. There he participated in the development of the sound synthesis process VOSIM and composition programs Midim.

Kaegi is the author of a television film, several books and many articles on electronic and computer music. A strong influence of the situation analysis of the music by communication research is evident from his writings. In "What is electronic music? " Kaegi has an accurate inventory of the global electronic music written publications (as of 1967).
