Werner, Margrave of the Nordmark

Werner von Walbeck (* 980 /85 † November 11, 1014 in Allerstedt ) was Count of Walbeck and 1003-1009 Margrave of Nordmark.

He was the eldest son of Count Lothar and the Godila of Rothenburg ( daughter of Count Werner I. ).

Although Werner was still a minor when his father died, he succeeded as Margrave, Count of Derlingau and Vogt of Walbeck. His mother managed to get by payment of 200 silver marks fief and Margraviate of her husband to her son. Werner did not know how to maintain the good relationship his father Henry II.

He was engaged to Liudgard, daughter of Margrave Ekkehard I of Meissen. When he refused to give him his daughter, he abducted her 998 from the monastery of Quedlinburg. At the insistence of the bride's father, however, he had to return again, which led to a bitter enmity. The wedding took place only after Ekkehard's death in 1002.

Werner stood in the subsequent period in opposition to Henry II

He, like his father exhausted itself largely in devastating and senseless feuds, where it was about ownership and succession issues in the Nordmark, and was particularly against the brothers- in Meissen and the Margrave Dedo I of Wettin - Merseburg.

In 1005 he urged the Peace of Advertising (first named as " Castrum Wirbeni " ) the contact for the recognition of German rule.

June 1009 sued Dedo I. him to the king and tries to bring him to office and dignity. On November 13, 1009 he murdered Dedo I. after he cremated his castle Wolmirstedt. Henry took the opportunity, then deny it on the court day to Pöhlde both the Margraviate as well as the associated fief. Dedos I. brother Friedrich von Eilenburg received the county in northern Hassegau; his son Dietrich I. the fief, including Burgwart Zoerbig.

Anno 1012 died Liutgard. A year later, he was suspected of treasonable relations with Boleslaw I. against the king. When he did not comply with the invitation of the king to appear before him, he fell of Eight, from which he broke away with the use of money and allods. In 1014 he attempted to abduct the same way Reinhilde of Beichlingen. He retired with this adventurous undertaking a wound to which he succumbed shortly thereafter in Allerstedt.
