The Weser -Ems-Halle is a multi-purpose hall in Oldenburg. In addition to the Weser -Ems-Halle there are other halls and outbuildings. The hall complex, which is used as an event and exhibition center is also referred as a whole Weser -Ems-Halle.

The Weser -Ems-Halle heard since 1 January 1994 to 100 percent of the city of Oldenburg. With a total area of ​​approximately 13,000 m² and a total capacity of around 16,000 visitors, the Weser -Ems-Halle is the largest exhibition hall in the Oldenburg area.

Location

The Weser -Ems-Halle is located in the district of Oldenburg Donnerschwee. It was built relatively inner city in an open area between the premises of the Deutsche Bahn at the Oldenburg Main Station and the Donnerschweer road.

Planning and construction of the Weser -Ems-Halle

The initial planning for a livestock auction hall in Oldenburg date back to 1938. However, due to the Second World War, the plans could not be pursued. In 1951 the plans were resumed.

The original hall complex consisting of the Weser -Ems-Halle, two other halls ( East Prussia and Silesia Hall, today Halls 2 4 ) and other outbuildings, including a restaurant, was built from 1953 to 1954. Since originally a cattle auction hall was planned, was located next to the hall complex a presentation arena for livestock. Furthermore, there was a siding for livestock transport. On September 11, 1954, the Weser -Ems-Halle was opened.

For the construction of the Weser -Ems-Halle 680,000 DM were estimated at the groundbreaking ceremony. Until the mid- 1960s, but 4.15 million DM had already been installed in the multi-purpose hall including later additions.

Extensions of the Weser -Ems-Halle

After the completion of the Weser -Ems-Halle quickly became clear that the building in use, was not sufficient not only as pure Viehauktionshalle, but as a multi-purpose hall. Thus, already in 1956 the building of an extension, of the Small Festival Hall, decided.

In 1975, the building complex has been expanded again by cultivation. It created the Upper ballrooms. In 1984 the interior behind the actual Weser -Ems-Halle, the (now additionally Hall 1 ) is called since 1987 Congress Hall was completely covered between the two side halls. This resulted in the Exhibition Hall (now also referred to as Hall 3 ).

In 1994, the Congress Hall was completely renovated. She was built and expanded to include a foyer. In addition, modern stage technology systems were installed. In 1996, the complex around the Halls 5 & 6 has been expanded.

Sports Park at the Weser -Ems-Halle

1980 was built in the open area next to the Weser -Ems-Halle another hall, which was operated as a sports park, regardless of the Weser -Ems-Halle. The hall was, for example, used in winter as a skating rink. However, the operation was not cost- permanently, so that the hall was still shut down again in the 1980s.

In 2000, the unused building was taken over by the operating company of the Weser -Ems-Halle and integrated as Hall 7 in the overall framework of multi-purpose halls.

EWE Arena

From 2004 to 2005, right next to the Weser -Ems-Halle, a sports arena, the EWE Arena built, which was opened on 11 June 2005.

Even if is in the EWE Arena use for basketball ( EWE Baskets ) and handball ( women's handball team VfL Oldenburg) in the foreground, it is designed as a multi -purpose hall. It can be used for other sporting events, concerts, exhibitions, fairs, etc..

2013 EWE Arena was renamed in small EWE Arena, as a newly built indoor arena Weser -Ems-Halle was named as a (large ) EWE Arena.

Use of the Weser -Ems-Halle

The Weser -Ems-Halle was indeed originally planned as a livestock auction hall, but it was, inter alia, from the beginning for many other events such as fairs, sporting events, concerts, exhibitions, revues, conventions, theater and musicals, festivals utilized.

Beginning of the 21st century has been reviewed by the city of Oldenburg the modernization of the building complex. As a result of the construction of a new multipurpose hall and the demolition of several old buildings was decided.

The new multi-purpose hall covers an area of ​​3,000 m². It is about 130 meters long and 70 meters wide. The 1,800 m² large foyer will be located at Berliner Platz next to the entrance to the EWE Arena. Another foyer connects the multi-functional hall with the existing exhibition hall. This is 500 m² in size.

For the new building behind the exhibition hall (Hall 3 ) standing halls 5 and 6 were removed and other buildings torn down. After the construction of the new hall also the Hall 7 and adjacent to the exhibition hall halls 2 and 4 are demolished. In another phase of construction is formed instead of the then demolished Hall 2 Foyer for a trade fair and congress hall, which is followed by an administration building.

With the construction of the new multi-purpose hall was started in February 2012. The opening is scheduled for April 2013. The subsequent demolition of the old buildings and the construction of the foyer of the exhibition and congress hall and the administration building should be completed in late 2013. All construction work will cost about 33.9 million euros, the total volume of the project with outdoor area and parking facilities located at 38.6 million euros.

Outdoor area at the Weser -Ems-Halle

The Weser -Ems-Halle has been built to the west of a large outdoor area. On the site, which is good 225,000 square meters, will be held in the fall of Oldenburg Kramer market since 1963. Furthermore, this area is used for various events. So find here in the summer months regularly a flea market, for in the winter months the Weser -Ems-Halle is used. In addition, the area is used as a parking lot for coaches and the P & R traffic.

Leisure and Adventure Park

There is a good 50 -hectare area that is unused between the open area at the Weser -Ems Hall and the site of the Deutsche Bahn. Consideration is being given to use this site for a recreation and amusement park. Together with the Weser -Ems-Halle it could trigger a center for sports and culture enthusiasts.

Possible in principle would be the use of the land, for example through halls for trend sports ( skateboarding and inline skating, BMX, climbing), but also adventure and theme parks. Furthermore, there are considerations to build here a new youth hostel, so much closer to the city center and in close proximity to the train station in Oldenburg would be than the current Hostel.

Integrated into the terrain would be the EWE Arena and already existing at the Maastricht road EWE Baskets Center ( training center and office EWE Baskets ).
