West Otago

West Otago is the local term for the part of the Otago region in the South Island of New Zealand, which borders the region of Southland. The area belongs administratively to South Otago, but is separated from it by the Blue Mountains.

West Otago consists of hilly farmland and the wooded hills near the Pomahaka River. Originally Kelso was provided as the capital of the region, but this role rapidly lost Tapanui, which is the largest settlement of West Otago today.
