Westenschouwen

Westenschouwen is a village which is now part of the municipality of Schouwen- Duiveland and is located in the Dutch province of Zeeland on the southwestern edge of the island of the same name. It is also the name of the located in the surrounding dunes nature reserve.

Westenschouwen was a separate municipality until 1816. This year this went on in the community Burgh.

The village was a fishing village, its harbor silted up in the 16th century. As a result, the fishermen left the place. The Gothic parish church fell into ruin. A picture from 1743 shows only the church tower in ruins. It was demolished in 1845.

1961 was formed by the union of the five municipalities Pittsburgh, Haamstede, Noord wave, Renesse and Serooskerke a new church. She was named Westerschouwen (not Westenschouwen ).

In 1997 Westerschouwen went on in the community Schouwen- Duiveland.
