Westside Shopping and Leisure Centre

The West Side is a leisure and shopping center in Brunnen, a district in the west of the Swiss Federal City of Bern, and was opened on 8 October 2008. The property comprises in addition to the shopping mall, a multiplex cinema, restaurants, a hotel and a conference center, a senior citizens' residence and a leisure pool with spa and fitness center. It was built under the supervision of the famous architect Daniel Libeskind.

The building was converted by the ARGE TU Westside as a general contractor, consisting of Strabag AG ( Vienna ) and the Rhomberg Bau AG is ( Bregenz). The developer is New Brünnen AG (a wholly owned subsidiary of Migros Aare ). The cost of the project is estimated at around 500 million Swiss francs.

In the first year 4.2 million visitors were counted in the West Side. The achieved total sales amounted to CHF 180 million.

The Westside Center was built on the newly built highway tunnel and is therefore directly accessible by car. For the opening up of public transport by a new S- Bahnhof ( Bern Brunnen West Side ) was created. Within the project " Tram Bern West " with the bus connection by a connection by tram (line 8) was replaced.

Bernaqua adventure

The adventure Bern Aqua is one with a water surface of 2000 square meters and 18 indoor and outdoor pools of the largest baths in Switzerland. It has the longest covered slides in the country. In addition, Bern Aqua has a Roman-Irish bath, a large sauna area, spa / beauty and fitness center.

On April 12, 2011 There was an accident in the swimming pool, when dissolved parts of the ceiling panel. A 110 square meter piece fell to the ground. There were two injured. An appraisal of the EMPA has shown that as a cause for this assembly or planning errors must be accepted. As a consequence thereof, the bathroom was closed for over a year. The total damage including the operating loss for the New Brünnen AG is currently around CHF 50 million, leading to a decline in visitor numbers 1000-2000 visitors per day. Since 23 May 2012, the water park is open again for the bathers. It was equipped with a completely new ceiling structure which is composed of lighter elements and is attached to stable media. On the opening day around 3 000 visitors in Bern Aqua. Tourism experts are of the opinion that Bern Aqua despite the difficult circumstances thanks to transparent communication confidence bathers had been able to win.
