The Wetzlar Cross ( Officially: interchange Wetzlar; Abbreviation: AK Wetzlar; short form: Cross Wetzlar ) is a motorway junction near Wetzlar in Hesse. It combines the federal motorway 45 ( Sauerlandlinie, E 40, E 41 ) with the Federal Highway 45 ( Giessen ring). It is the only motorway junction in Germany, which is entirely built in the elaborate "Maltese form."

Geography

The motorway junction is located on the city of Wetzlar in the Lahn- Dill-Kreis, on the outskirts of Asslar. Nearest city are Blasbach, Hermannstein and Naunheim, belonging to Wetzlar, and the Aßlarer downtown. It is located about 5 kilometers north of Wetzlar city center, about 13 kilometers west of Gießen and about 45 km southeast of Siegen.

The Wetzlar Cross carries on the A 45, the connection point number 29 on the A 480, the number 2

History

The Wetzlar Cross emerged in the early 1980s with the construction of only 3.7 km section of the broken A 480, which is a part of the proposed eastern extension of the A 48. This section begins at the federal highway 277 (junction Aßlar ) and ends approximately 1.2 kilometers north of the motorway junction in the provisional junction Blasbach.

Design and development of state

The A 45 is expanded four lanes, only on a approx. 3,7 km long section between the parking facility Wetzlar and the cross the carriageway Dortmund runs dreistreifig. The A 480 features south of the cross over four lanes. North inputs for the A 480 are designed four lanes, but the road swung north direction in the cross into the opposite lane and guided two-lane without separate carriageways until the freeway ends and meets in a right-hander on the L 3053rd The inputs for the highway lead nor ca. 520 meters to the northeast.

As the only " Maltese Cross " in Wetzlar Germany the cross is of particular importance. It is also noteworthy that on the 370 m long viaduct leading angel A45 invariably crosses all connecting ramps, which is topologically related. Although the structure was built with a total of seven bridges and designed for high speed ramps at great expense, it comes to traffic- only minor importance. The connection ramps received little use because the majority of the traffic (> 90 % ) lies on the A 45.

Traffic

The cross is traveled daily by about 61,000 vehicles.
