Wieldrecht

Wieldrecht is a former office and a subsequent municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. The place is a neighborhood within the city of Dordrecht, in the far west of this city, at the Dordtsen Kil nowadays.

History

The village Wieldrecht already existed in the Middle Ages; at the Elizabeth flood of 1421 it disappeared along with the other Villages in Dordrecht Waard. The magnificent property rights on Wieldrecht but were not released, and as the land dry slowly fell back, Wieldrecht arose again, first as part of the well again insurgent local Dubbeldam, and later as an independent office. But a real village center could barely form; the most important was Wieldrecht as a location for the ferry to 's- Gravendeel.

In the Kingdom of the Netherlands Wieldrecht formed shortly an independent municipality until it was (, west lights part beyond the Dordtsen Kil ) incorporated in 1856, together with De Mijl, in Dubbeldam (eastern part and village) and 's- Gravendeel. Just before their repeal the entire community had 502 inhabitants. In 1940, the village was almost completely destroyed by acts of war in Slacht to Dordrecht. Since 1960 it belongs to the municipality of Dordrecht. 1977 would be lifted to 's- Gravendeel because a tunnel under the Dordtsen Kil had made superfluous the ferry.
