Wierzba, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship

Wierzba ( German Wiersba, 1938-1945 Beldahnsee ) is a scoring for community Ruciane -Nida village in southeastern Mazury in Polish Warmia and Mazury, powiat Piski.

The village is located 21 kilometers northwest of the town Pisz ( German Johannesburg ) on the eastern shore of Jezioro Beldany ( German Beldahnsee ).

History

The village Wiersba was probably founded in the 18th century. The town's name derives from the Polish wierzba from for willow tree.

Until 1905 Wiersba belonged to the governmental district Gumbinnen, then the governmental district Olsztyn.

1938 was renamed after the adjacent waters in the wake of the "Germanization " of the Masurian place names in the former Wiersba Beldahnsee.

On 27 January 1945 the Red Army Beldahnsee, the civilian population has just been almost completely evacuated reached. After the end of World War II in 1945 to the German Empire ( East Prussia ) belonging Beldahnsee fell to Poland. The resident population was German, if they had not fled, largely expelled after 1945 and replaced by new residents from other parts of Poland. The place was returned or renamed Wierzba.

From 1975 to 1998 Wierzba belonged to the former Suwałki Voivodeship, then came 1999 on the newly formed Warmia and Mazury.

In Wierzba there is a Tarpan horse breeding as well as a hotel of the Academic sailing clubs of Warsaw. In addition, Wierzba combines a car ferry to the west bank of the Beldahnsees that provides a connection after shortening Mikołajki ( German Nikolaiken ) and already in the 1988 autobiography " childhood in East Prussia " by Marion Dönhoff was historically mentioned.
