Wigbert

St. Wigbert (also known under the name Wippertus; * 670 in Wessex; † 732-736 or 746 or 747 in Fritzlar ) was a missionary companion of Boniface, and first abbot of the Benedictine monastery Fritzlar.

Life

Since it seems to have been a priest of the same name, Wigbert this year in Fritzlar, it came early to a little more to unraveling mixing of information, in particular as regards the chronology. Opinions differ widely in research. The younger Wigbert was also a priest in the monastery; he later became possibly the third abbot of Fritzlar.

Wigbert was a monk from the Anglo-Saxon monastery of Glastonbury and pupil of Boniface. In the late 7th century, he evangelized under Willibrord with Boniface in Friesland. To 720 he came to the Hessen and Thuringia mission area. After Boniface had 723 like the Donareiche at Fritzlar in northern Hesse, he built a chapel from its wood and founded a year later a monastery on the site. Wigbert was used by Saint Boniface was the first abbot and school principals. For about 737 he was abbot of Ohrdruf, where he established a school for missionaries in Thuringia. In both monasteries was Wigbert teacher Lull, Megingaud of Würzburg and Sturmius three outstanding missionaries and later abbots and bishops.

Wigbert died in Fritzlar and was there buried in the Basilica, which was built on the site of St. Boniface ' wooden chapel.
