Wigtown

Wigtown ( schott Gaelic Baile na h- Uige ) is a town in the unitary authority Dumfries and Galloway with 987 inhabitants (as of 2001).

It is located in the Machar of Galloway, a peninsula in the south of Scotland and is approximately 10 miles from the neighboring Whithorn. Because of the proximity to Whithorns religious sites also Wigtown benefited in the Middle Ages by the pilgrim travelers, was raised wealthy and to the Royal Burgh.

Since 1998 Wigtown Scotland's first official " book town " ( Book Town) and there are now more than 20 book stores and more than 250,000 books. There is an annual book festival in Wigtown.
