Wiguleus Fröschl of Marzoll

Wiguleus Fröschl of Marzoll ( born April 4, 1445 Marzoll today to Bad Reichenhall, † November 6, 1517 in Passau) was Prince-Bishop of Passau.

Life

Fröschl came from the wealthy patrician layer of the Bavarian city of Saline Reichenhall, his father was the Salzsiedeherr Fröschl Ludwig ( † before 1481 ). After studying law at the University of Vienna Wiguleus went to Rome at the papal court, where he was ordained a priest in 1467. From 1478 he worked as a canon in Passau. As an intermediary in the so-called "Third Bishop of Passau dispute", he traveled a few times to Rome. From 1480 Fröschl had for five years held the office of vicar-general for Lower Austria and therefore lived in Vienna. From 1486 to 1490 he was then Vicar General of Upper Austria; Upper and Lower Austria were originally church to the diocese of Passau. The position of Domdekan in Passau took over Fröschl by Christoph von Schachner, as this was 1490 Prince-Bishop. After his death, he was elected on 14 January 1500 to the 56th Bishop of Passau.

The economically thriving city of Passau suffered the devastating flood of 1501 a serious setback. In response to the disaster, the bishop began with a work of reform, which included, among others, lowering the tax burden on his subjects. In 1503, he convened a diocesan synod " to improve the deep sunken church discipline ", which had a renewal of the clergy to the destination. With his attempt to reform the church from within, he showed himself to the problems of the Catholic Church on the eve of the Reformation quite open. On November 6, 1517 Wiguleus Fröschl died, his final resting place, he found in the cathedral of Passau.
