Wilhelm Cramer

Wilhelm Cramer ( * about 1745 ≈ June 2, 1746 in Mannheim, † October 5, 1799 in London, England), violinist and conductor, the son of Johann Jacob Cramer and Sybilla Catharina Gentes.

Life

Wilhelm Cramer was employed as a violinist at the electoral court orchestra. He was the greatest performers of the Mannheim school and in 1772 he was solo violinist in the electoral court orchestra. At the instigation of Johann Christian Bach in 1773 he went with his family to London, where he conducted court concerts and was also conductor of the orchestra of the Italian Opera. In addition, he conducted concerts of ancient music and the annual concert of "Musical Fund", which later became " Royal Society of Musicians".

A son was Johann Baptist Cramer.
