Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Elder

Wilhelm Lindenschmit ( the Elder) ( born March 9, 1806 Mainz, † March 12, 1848 in Munich) was a German history painter.

Life

Lindenschmit was the son of a medalist. His first artistic training was Lindenschmit 1823 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The years 1824 and 1825 he spent at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. As Peter von Cornelius moved from Dusseldorf to Munich also Linde Schmidt returned late in 1825 there back to support to 1828 Cornelius as its students and staff in the execution of large orders fresco. In Munich Lindenschmit then settled and domesticated. In 1848 he was appointed court painter in Meiningen, but he died in the same year.

Work

In Munich Lindenschmit initially painted for the arcades of the Hofgarten the victory of Louis the rich over Albrecht Achilles of Brandenburg in the Bavarian War at the Battle of Giengen ( Giengen ). In 1830 he finished the work on the fresco The Battle of farmers of Sendling 1705 on the northern outer wall of the old parish church of St. Margaret in Sendling, which can be regarded as sure to be best-known work to date. The picture was taken in 1895 and re- painted by his more famous son William Lindenschmit this year and 1896 by his grandson Karl Heinrich Hermann ( in other sources as H. Lindenschmit called ) completed, thereby however, slightly modified and thus distorted. The image has been repeatedly refreshed in the following period, so in 1964 and most recently in 2004, which was also trying to reconstruct the original state.

Other works Linde Schmit are the majority of images from Schiller seals in the " writing room of the Queen" in Königsbau and two scenes from the life of Leonardo da Vinci for the loggia of the Alte Pinakothek after designs by Cornelius.

Other monumental frescoes of his hand can be seen in Hohenschwangau Castle, where he embellished four chambers with scenes from the history of Bavaria. After completion of this work he painted in oil the struggle of women Cimbric against the Romans and the unfortunate battle of Arminius. His later works include the Luitpold battle from the time of Louis the Child and the collection of Otto the Great in the liberated Augsburg in the evening after the victory on the Lechfeld.

Appreciation

Linde Schmit combines art, especially in his early portraits realistic approaches with the tradition of classicism and the Nazarenes. The painter was marked particularly by a thorough study of the history and costume. His figures are full of character and expression. In his later history painting is clearly the late classical attitude of Cornelius - school feel.
