Wilhelm Reiss

Wilhelm Johann tear ( born June 13, 1838 in Mannheim, † September 29, 1908 in Könitz at Saalfeld ) was a German explorer and volcanologist.

Tear, was born as the son of industrialist and mayor of Mannheim, Friedrich tear. He traveled in 1858-1860, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. In 1866 he went with Karl von Fritsch and Moritz Alphons Stübel to Greece.

With this tear undertook from 1868 to 1876 a very fruitful expedition to South America, where they explored the Andes. They went from the coast to Bogota, then through the Cauca Valley after Popayán, Pasto and Quito. During her five -year stay in the area they boarded the first time the Cotopaxi and Tungurahua, then turned to Peru, drove down the Amazon and traveled the coast of Brazil.

After his return tear lived until 1892 in Berlin, where he auswertete and published the results of the trip. Later he lived at Castle Könitz ( Könitz, Thuringia ), where he died on 29 September 1908.

Honors

Tear was 1885-1887 Chairman of the Geographical Society in Berlin and in 1888 chairman of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory.
