Wilhelm Ule

Wilhelm Ule, also: Willi Ule ( born May 9, 1861 in Halle ( Saale), † February 13, 1940 in Rostock ) was a German geographer and Limnologist.

Life

As the son of the scientist Dr. Otto Ule and his wife Marie Strecker he attended until 1882, the City Gymnasium in Halle an der Saale. Then he studied in Halle and Berlin, the teachers of geography and mathematics. In 1888 he received the degree of Dr. phil. at the University of Halle on the topic The Mansfeld lakes. A year later he was appointed Lecturer in Geography at the University of Halle, after the topic was The low ratios of the Masurian Lakes his habilitation. In the same year he worked as Managing Director at the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, who had also based in Halle an der Saale.

In 1907 he moved with his appointment as associate professor at the University of Rostock. When you get there founded the Geographical Institute in 1911, the geography was there to discipline. He took part in 1911 at the German Antarctic expedition and traveled in South America. After India and Ceylon, he traveled in 1914. In April 1933, he retired. On March 1, 1936, the Leopoldina took him on as a member.

As editor of the journals Geographical work and messages of the Geographical Society to Rostock he was able to contribute his expertise. Ule considered the founder of the Geography of Mecklenburg.
