Willard Van der Veer

Willard Van der Veer ( born August 23, 1894 in Brooklyn, New York City; † June 16, 1963 in Encino, California ) was an American cinematographer. At the Academy Awards in November 1930, he was awarded the Oscar for Best Cinematography.

Biography

Together with Joseph T. Rucker accompanied Van der Veer in the years 1928-1930, the first Antarctic expedition of Richard E. Byrd for more than a year in the Antarctic. From the filming of the documentary there was with Byrd to the South Pole, for the Van der Veer and Rucker in 1930 won an Academy Award. In the 10-minute documentary short film Three on a Rope ( 1938) on the climb of Tahquitz Rock in the Southern California San Jacinto Mountains, he was not only a cameraman, but also director and screenwriter.

He was also the cinematographer for the documentary film ' Giant' Stars Are Off to Texas ( 1955), which shows a meeting of the actors and the film crew of giants by George Stevens, and most recently on the sci-fi horror film The Crawling Hand (1963 ) of Herbert L. Strock. At the beginning of the 1960s he was also director camera episodes of the TV series Maverick.
