Willi Schaefer

The Winery Willi Schaefer is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate community Graach on the Moselle River area Bernkastel ( Mosel ) of the German wine-growing region Mosel. 2014 managed the winery about 4 hectares of vines that were planted exclusively with Riesling. The estate is a member of the Association of German predicate Wine Estates (VDP ).

History

The Shepherd family can prove its roots in Graach by a deed of gift from the year 1121. Willi Schaefer took over in 1971, the winemaking responsibilities as winemaker.

Willi Schaefer was 1993 member of the " Big Ring VDP Mosel -Saar- Ruwer ". In 1997 the winery was nominated by the Gault Millau Wine Guide as "Newcomer of the Year."

In 2002 rose son Christopher, " Geisenheim " oenologist, together with his wife Andrea in the family winery in.

Vineyards and varietals

In the winery four acres of Riesling (100 %) are cultivated on extreme slopes. The individual layers are in Graacher kingdom of heaven, Graacher Domprobst and Wehlener sundial. After evaluation of the wine journalists Stephen Brook and Stephan Reinhardt the best wines of the estate come from the position Graacher Domprobst. The oldest vines are about 60 years old and 60-70 % of these vines are direct carriers that have low stock returns.

The musts are fermented in traditional load of barrels. The young wines are about six months on the lees before being filled.

With an average yield of 52 hectoliters per hectare in about 35,000 bottles of wine are produced. Only a small portion is removed dry. Feinherbe to sweet wines dominate the map. Shepherd tries to generate as from healthy grapes without strong influence of the noble rot wines.
