William Callow

William Callow ( born July 28, 1812 in Greenwich, now a part of London, † February 1908 in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England ) was an English landscape painter, watercolourist and engraver of the 19th century.

Life

Callow was at the artist Copley Fielding in the teaching and learning in this drawing in nature ( plein air ). Other skills he acquired with the sons of Fielding, by Theodor and Thales Fielding, in the years 1825-1827, the coloration of printing and aquatint. During these years he continued to study the art of watercolor.

1829 got Thales Fielding Callow a job as an engraver in Paris, where he worked with his friend Charles Bentley. In Paris, he turned at the suggestion of Thomas Shotter Boys back to the watercolor. In the Paris Salon of 1831 he exhibited his watercolor Richmond Hill and was then hired as an art teacher for the French king Louis -Philippe I. family. For several years he gave to the children of the King Louis d'Orléans, duc de Nemours and Princess Clémentine art classes. During this time his works were popular in England.

Callow was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society ( RWS ), the Old Water Colour Society in 1841 and returned back to London. He began to paint larger works and moved away from his earlier, more volatile style of his smaller works. He had many disciples and was in the favor of the royal family. In 1855 he moved to Buckinghamshire, where he remained until his death.

Callow traveled extensively through the Netherlands, Belgium, a trip to the Rhine and then through Switzerland to Italy. About the early trips he led a detailed diary with information about people, events and landscapes. These records allowed him to dictate his autobiography shortly before his death in 1908 HM Cundall.

Callow was married to Harriet Ann Smart.
