William Chandler Roberts-Austen

Sir William Chandler Roberts - Austen ( born March 3 1843 in Kennington, Surrey, † November 22, 1902 in London) was a British metallurgist, who is known for his research on the physical properties of metals and their alloys.

As a professor of metallurgy at the Royal School of Mines, he developed methods for the determination of alloying elements. Particularly important for modern industry was the pyrometer developed by him, by means of which one can make precise temperature measurements in the high temperature range.

In honor of William Chandler Roberts - Austen, the γ - solid solutions of iron are called austenite.
