William Curtis

William Curtis ( born January 11, 1746 Alton, Hampshire, † July 7, 1799 in Brompton ) was an English botanist, pharmacist and entomologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Curtis".

Life and work

Curtis was chairman of the Chelsea Physic Garden. He founded botanical gardens in Bermondsey, 1771 in Lambeth and 1789 in Brompton. 1787 founded the Curtis Botanical Magazine, and was its editor until his death.

Ehrentaxon

The plant genus Curtisia Ait. from the order of dogwood -like ( Cornales ) has been named after him.
