William E. Rees

William Rees ( born December 18, 1943) is a Canadian professor at the University of British Columbia and former director of the School of Community and Regional Planning ( scarp ). He is internationally known for the concept of the Ecological Footprint, which he developed in collaboration with the Swiss Mathis Wackernagel.

His teaching and research focuses on the policy and planning with regard to global environmental trends and the necessary ecological conditions for sustainable socioeconomic development.

Awards

As part of his scientific work Rees was honored several times. So he received in 1997 due to its research achievements the Senior Killam Research Prize. 2000 appointed him The Vancouver Sun as one of the best " public intellectuals " of British Columbia. In 2006, Rees was elected to the Royal Society of Canada. In 2007 he was awarded a three-year membership in the prestigious Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
