William Elliott, Baron Elliott of Morpeth

Robert William Elliott, Baron Elliott of Morpeth (* December 11, 1920, † 20 May 2011), known as William Elliott, was a British politician of the Conservative Party.

Life

Elliott was born in 1920, the son of Mary Elizabeth Fulthorpe and Richard Elliot. His father, Richard Elliott, known as " Dick", was a town councilor and mayor of Morpeth. William Elliott attended King Edward VI Grammar School in Morpeth.

Since 1939 he worked as a farmer. In the period 1948-1955 he was Chairman ( Chairman ), Vice President ( Vice - President) and President of the Northern Area Young Conservatives.

Elliott married in 1956 Catherine Jane Morpeth. Together they have five children, four daughters and a son.

Membership in the House of Commons

In a by-election in 1954 and the general election in 1955, he took up the constituency of Morpeth in the general election. Elliott was elected in a by-election in 1957 as MP for the constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne North in the House of Commons and represented the constituency until June 9, 1983, when he no longer took in his previous constituency and Robert Crofton Brown was elected.

From 1958 to 1959 he was Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS ) in the Department of Transportation ( Ministery of Transport and Civil Aviation ) and in 1959 took over the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Home Office, the Home Office ( Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Home Office). In 1960, he became its Minister of State (Minister of State ) appointed and remained so until 1961. From 1961 to 1963 he was Minister for Technical Cooperation (Minister for Technical Co -operation ). From 1963 to 1964 he was Deputy Whip of the Government ( Assistant Government Whip ) and 1966-1970 Whip of the opposition.

From June to October 1970, he was Comptroller of the Household, the third highest position in the royal court by the office of Lord Steward of the Household and the " Treasurer of the Household ." From 1970 to 1974 he was deputy chairman of the Conservative Party.

Membership in the House of Lords

On 16 May 1985 he was appointed as Baron Elliott of Morpeth, Morpeth in the County of Northumberland and of of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne for Life peer and thus a member of the House of Lords. On November 13, 1985 he gave his inaugural speech. He was from 1992 to 2002 Deputy Chairman ( Deputy Speaker) and 1997-2002 Deputy Chair of Committees. From 1980 to 1983 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Special Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food ( Select Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food ). As a political issue of particular interest, he stated in Parliament biography on the website of the House of Lords regional policy.

On 19 February 2007, he reported there last heard; regularly spoke Elliott, even at an advanced age, to animal welfare issues. He recently took part in a vote on 17 March 2010. He was suspended permanently from October 5, 2010 due to a granted by the House of Lords Leave of Absence.

Other offices and honors

In Trade Finance plc, he was director from 1970 to 1973. From 1975 to 1992 he was president of the Water Companies Association. From 1980 to 1983 he was director of the Sino French Holdings ( Hong Kong) and 1980-1995 Chairman ( Chairman ) of United Artists Communications ( North East District ). In the Port of Tyne Authority, he was director from 1982 to 1991.

In 1974 he was elevated to Knight ( Knight) and appointed 1982 ( according to other sources 1983) as Deputy Lieutenant of Cumbria.
