William Frederick Eberlein

William Frederick Eberlein ( * 1917, † 1986) was an American mathematician.

Eberlein studied from 1936 to 1942 at the University of Wisconsin and at Harvard University, where he received his doctorate in 1942 with the work of Closure, Convexity, and Linearity in Banach Spaces at Marshall Harvey Stone. He had more appointments at the Institute for Advanced Study (1947-1948), at the University of Wisconsin (1948-1955), at Wayne State University (1955-1956) and finally from 1957 at the University of Rochester, where he remained until end of his life remained.

His main areas of work were the mathematical analysis, ergodic theory and mean value theorems, numerical integration, functional analysis and harmonic analysis. WF Eberlein also worked in theoretical physics and dealt there with models of space-time and quantum physics, especially symmetries and spinor calculus.

The set of Eberlein - Šmulian, a set of functional analysis is connected with his name.
