In 1814 he retired, supported by a Russian uncle. In 1818 he married Catherine Macfarlane, daughter of a merchant from Glasgow. Together with her brother he operated a farm in Port Monteith, Perthshire. He died in poverty. He wrote several poems, but the only one that survived him, was the Jacobite ballad, Wae 's me for Prince Charlie.
