William H. Robertson

William Henry Robertson ( born October 10, 1823 in Bedford, New York, † December 6, 1898 in Katonah, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1867 and 1869 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Henry Robertson was born about eight years after the end of the British - American War in Bedford and grew up there. He attended community schools and the Union Bedford Academy in Bedford. Robertson studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1847 and then began practicing in White Plains. He sat in the years 1849 and 1850 in the New York State Assembly and in the years 1854 and 1855 in the Senate from New York. Between 1855 and 1867 he was a judge in Westchester County. He served 1860-1866 as an inspector in the seventh Brigade of the National Guard of New York. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1866 for the 40th Congress, he was in the tenth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William Radford on March 4, 1867. Since he gave up for reelection in 1868, he retired after the March 3, 1869 out of the Congress.

Robertson ran unsuccessfully in the years 1872 and 1879 for the post of governor of New York. Between 1872 and 1881 he sat in the Senate from New York. During this time he was 1874-1881 President pro tempore. In 1881 he was Collector at the Port of New York - a position which he held until 1885. He sat in the years 1888 and 1889, again in the Senate from New York. On December 6, 1898, he died in Katonah and was then buried in the Union Cemetery in Bedford.
