William I, Count of Nevers

William I († 1098 ) was a Count of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonnerre ( jure uxoris ) out of the house Monceaux. He was a son of Count Rainald I. and Adele, a daughter of King Robert II of France.

He was married to Ermengarde, the daughter of Count Raynald of Tonnerre, 1065, the county Tonnerre inherited after her cousin, Count Hugo Rainald, was elected Bishop of Langres. Their children were:

  • Rainald II (X August 5, 1089 ), co-regent of his father
  • Wilhelm ( † after 1099 ), Count of Tonnerre
  • Robert ( † 1084 ), Bishop of Auxerre
  • Ermengarde, ∞ with Hubert, Viscount in Maine
  • Helvide, ∞ with William, Count of Evreux

After his death in 1098 William was buried in the church of Saint -Etienne in Nevers. Because his eldest son Rainald II had died before him, followed him in Nevers and Auxerre be directly grandson Wilhelm II after. The county Tonnerre was inherited by the second son, William.
