William IV, Count of Nevers

William IV (French Guillaume ) (* 1130, † October 24, 1168 ) was a Count of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonnerre out of the house Monceaux. He was a son of Count William III. of Nevers and his wife Ida von Sponheim.

William was knighted in 1159. Against him to the allied Count Stephen I of Sancerre and Renaud of Joigny, but William could win in a battle on April 15, 1163 on his opponents.

He led a crusade army to Palestine in 1168. His arrival took King Amalric I of Jerusalem as an opportunity to start an expedition against Egypt, which was joined by all the Christian forces, with the exception of the Knights Templar. William himself could not participate in the campaign, since he died before. He was buried in Bethlehem. But fought with most of his knights, who were probably responsible for the massacre of the population of Bilbeis.

William was married since 1164 with Eleanor of Vermandois († 1213), daughter of Count Rudolf I of Vermandois. Since she had no children, his brother Guido succeeded him in the government of Nevers.
