William Larned

William Augustus "Bill" Larned ( born December 30, 1872 in Summit, New Jersey, † December 16, 1926 in New York) was an American tennis player and seven-time individual winner of the U.S. Championships.

Life

Larned was in 1872 in New Jersey to the world and studied at the private Cornell University in Ithaca. In 1892 he won the item of Intercollegiate Championships. Between 1891 and 1911 he played regularly at the U.S. Championships and reached up to twice in every year in which he took up, at least the semifinals.

1898 Larned took on Spanish-American War as a member of the Rough Riders part.

In 1901 he won the individual title of the American championships by defeating the final Beals Wright. The following year, Larned konne defend the title. After he was defeated in the Challenge Round Laurence Doherty 1903, he was again in 1907 to win the U.S. title. He defended it four more times in a row, until his career end of 1911. Besides Richard Sears and Bill Tilden he could win the tournament with the most.

Twice - 1896 and 1905 - Larned stepped beyond to the tournament of Wimbledon and each reached the quarterfinals.

1926 Larned committed at the age of 53 years suicide.
