William Lockhart (surgeon)

William Lockhart ( born October 3, 1811 in Liverpool, † April 29, 1896 in Blackheath ) was an English physician and missionary.

Life

His training as a doctor graduated from Lockhart on " Meath Hospital" in Dublin and the " Guy's Hospital" in London. In 1834 he became a member of the " Royal College of Surgeons ." He applied at the " London Missionary Society " (LMS ) and traveled in 1838 to Guangdong (China) as a physician and missionary. Were at his initiative in Macao and founded in 1842 a hospital in Shanghai. During a home visit, in 1857, he was co-partner of " Royal College of Surgeons ." In 1864 he was appointed to the Board of the LMS. In 1878 he became the first chairman of the "Medical Missionary Association ." During his stay in China, Lockhart commented critically on various social issues, including the ancient Chinese tradition of foot binding in women. In 1861 he published his book The Medical Missionary in China, in which he demanded, among other things, the strict separation of the activity as a missionary of the of the physician.
