William Martin Leake

William Martin Leake / li ː k / (* January 14, 1777 in London, † January 6, 1860 in Brighton ) was an English archaeologist (Amateur).

Life

Leake was only an artillery officer and was entrusted with several diplomatic missions in the Orient since 1800. Then he traveled for several years in Greece archaeological interest and participated later, inspired by Lord Byron, even in the Greek War of Independence. After he had taken his departure in 1823 as a lieutenant colonel, he lived only scientific employment. He undertook for this purpose new trips to Asia Minor.
