William Mason (composer)

William Mason ( born January 24, 1829 in Boston, Massachusetts, † July 14, 1908 in New York, NY) was an American pianist, composer and music educator.

Mason studied since 1849 in Leipzig by Ignaz Moscheles, Moritz Hauptmann and Ernst Friedrich Richter, then in Weimar with Franz Liszt and finally in Prague with Alexander Dreyschock. He has performed as a concert pianist and eventually settled in 1855 as a pianist and piano teacher in New York.

Mason composed ballads, Scherzi, dances and Caprices for the piano that are close to the salon music. In addition, he also wrote several educational music magazines.
