William Murray (New York politician)

William Murray ( born October 1, 1803 Middletown, New York, † August 25 1875 in Goshen, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1851 and 1855 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Ambrose Spencer Murray was his brother.

Career

William Murray was born in the beginning of the 19th century in Middletown in Orange County and grew up there. During this time he attended community schools. He then worked as a clerk ( clerk ) in commercial farms in Middletown and later in New York City. Then he went to commercial transactions. In 1841 he moved to Goshen.

Politically he belonged at that time to the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1850 he was in the ninth election district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Thomas McKissock on January 4, 1851. In 1852 he was elected the tenth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Marius Schoonmaker on March 4, 1853. He retired after March 3, 1855 from the Congress.

After his time Congress, he worked in agriculture. He was instrumental in the founding in 1856 of the Republican Party and later a member of this. In 1857 he became president of the Goshen Bank - a position which he held until his death on August 25, 1875 in Goshen. His body was then buried in St. James' Cemetery.
