William R. Miller (psychologist)

William R. Miller ( b. 1947 ) is an American psychologist, professor emeritus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and together with Stephen Rollnick founder of motivational interviewing (Motivational Interviewing).

Life

After studying psychology and clinical psychology 1976, Miller received his doctorate at the University of Oregon for the Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D.). In addition to his teaching, he conducted research at the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions ( CASAA ), Albuquerque. Based on the experience in addiction research he developed in close collaboration with Stephen Rollnick the method of motivational interviewing, which was originally designed solely for the therapeutic treatment of addicts.
