William Reid Dick

Sir William Reid Dick RA (born 13 January 1879 in Glasgow, † 1 October 1961, in London) was a Scottish sculptor who was known for the innovative stylization of form with its monuments and the simplicity of his portraits. He became in 1921 associate member of the Royal Academy and in 1928 a full member. Dick was 1933-1938 President of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. He was defeated in 1935 by King George V knighted (Sir). From 1938 until his death he was Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland for King George VI.

At the age of twelve years, Dick was in his hometown at a stonecutter in teaching. During the next five years he learned during the day working with the stone, he attended evening classes in drawing and modeling. 1896 his apprenticeship was completed. He then moved to the Glasgow School of Art and took a teaching position at the Bellshill Academy on in Lanarkshire. From 1908 he lived in London and presented in local galleries.

Dick was known during his lifetime as a sculptor of portrait statues. The sculptures at Unilever House at Blackfriars Bridge and the eagle on the Royal Air Force Monument on the Victoria Embankment are of him. In Regent 's Park his fountain Boy with Frog ( 1936). He was also the creator of the imposing bronze statue of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in London's Grosvenor Square ( in front of the Embassy of the United States), by George V of the House of Lords and another in Jersey, the. John Soane statue at the Bank of England On October 22, 1949, the equestrian statue of Lady Godiva was in Broadgate, Coventry, England, unveiled a £ 20,000 gift from Mr WH Bassett - Green, a Coventry - country man.
