Life

Whittlesey was probably born in the county of Cambridgeshire and studied. He is the nephew of Simon Islip, who also was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1349 to 1366. On September 10, 1349 Whittlesey was appointed Master of Peterhouse, 1351, however, came back. In October 1360 he was elected bishop of Rochester. His consecration took place on 6 February 1362. On March 6, 1364 he became bishop of Worcester, before he became the successor of Simon Langham, Archbishop of Canterbury on 11 October 1368. However, his tenure as archbishop remained uneventful caused by his deteriorating health. On the night of 5th to June 6, 1375 he died in Lambeth.
