William Young (composer)

William Young ( * 1610, † April 23, 1662 in Innsbruck ) was an English viol player and composer.

Life

About Young's career and life in England little is known. From this period there are copies of some of his works for Lyra Viol, which are a reference to the Cathedral of Durham. His last years, beginning no later than 1652, he spent in Innsbruck, at the court of Archduke Ferdinand Karl music-loving. From the Innsbruck archive shows that Young with the court Kapellmeister Cesti before Emperor Emperor Ferdinand III. has performed in Regensburg. For this purpose, the Engellendische Musicant received 100 ducats. 1660 Young traveled to England for a short time. His death is registered in the parish registers of St. Jacob in Innsbruck, on April 23, 1662.

The only surviving print is his 1653 at the publisher Wagner published in Innsbruck collection of 21 sonatas à 3, 4 e 5 These sonatas contain stylistic elements from many European countries. With these printing the continental style came to England, where he finds himself in some works by Matthew Locke and Henry Purcell those of Locke students.
