Wimal Weerawansa

Wimal Weerawansa (* in Kalutara ) is a politician from Sri Lanka. He is the leader of the National Freedom Front and former Housing Minister.

As a result of differences between the UN and the Government of Sri Lanka to set up a commission of inquiry into human rights violations during the civil war in Sri Lanka, he mobilized hundreds of his followers that block the UN offices in the capital Colombo since the beginning of July 2010. After that he went on a hunger strike, which he only wanted to end his own words, to the UN gives assurances that the soldiers and political leaders, the Sri Lanka brought peace, not be portrayed as criminals. On 9 July 2010, he announced his resignation as Minister of Housing.
